I've run many pounds of slugs through choked barrels. Now, I have absolutely no knowledge of the tungsten and various other steel shot replacements that are heavier. As it is, I can still replace that barrel, and I've never seen any real problems with barrels in person. If you can show me consistent, repeated examples of the barrels failing from steel shot, I'll believe that it's a bad idea. on the barrel steel being too soft for modern steel shot. Call it a featherweight if you want, but I don't think they're that light. I think they affect the felt recoil way more than the weight of the gun. I personally don't think that the ergonomics on the 37's is real great. Sadly, it was stolen when I was deer hunting a few years back. He doesn't use it as much as some people, but it's always consistent, and always reliable.
My Dad had a 20ga 37 when he was in high school. Your model 37 is a great shotgun that was designed by the best.

Some of the Modified chokes in my 37's shot like tight Full chokes. Regarding the use of slugs, follow GreyOne's advice and have your choke constriction measured. Remington later sold the design to Ithaca, who brought it out as the model 37.
John Moses Browning (that world reknown firearms inventor) created the design and sold it to Remington, who first produced it as the Remington model 17 (no trigger sear disconnector in the model 17 either). Back then, you were expected to be more aware of how your firearm functioned, and act accordingly. As to whether it was intentional or not, let's just say that back then, you were taught to release the trigger after the shot was fired, and before you pumped a fresh round into the chamber. Ithaca not only installed that "RayBar" front sight on the 37's, but also advertised it for sale separately as a replacement sight with appropriate threads for installation on other manufactures shotguns.Īs far as "pump-firing" capability, the earlier 37's did not have a trigger sear disconnecter (Winchester model 97's and model 12's didn't either). Stock has some dings and scratches, but that doesnt impede the function. Obviously there was surface rust speckling the metal, but not pitted. For all intent and purposed it seem to be in decent shape, was told it was in storage and the previous owner didnt shoot it.
